In commercial terms, exchange volumes and value position the tomato processing sector among the major players of the global food industry. During the 2021/2022 crop year, the main production and exchange countries exported approximately 6.9 million tonnes of finished products in the three leading tomato categories: tomato paste (3.4 million tonnes), canned tomatoes (whole or pieced, peeled or unpeeled – 1.9 million tonnes) and tomato sauces & ketchup (1.6 million tonnes).

During the 2021 financial year, the main production and exchange countries exported approximately 6.88 million tonnes of finished products in the three leading tomato categories:
- Paste (3.4 million tonnes)
- Canned tomatoes, whole or pieced, peeled or unpeeled ( 1.9 million tonnes)
- Tomato sauces & ketchup (1.6 million tonnes)

The 2021-2022 world trade in tomato products (May 2021-April 2022) confirmed the expectations of international market experts. Despite the slight increase in processed quantities (+2%) recorded between 2000 and 2021, available volumes have not fueled an increase in supply flows : after two years marked by an exceptional acceleration of global exchanges, in a context of extreme tension in the area of inventories (the two phenomena being closely linked and consecutive to the Covid pandemic), trade seems to have begun a gradual return to “normal levels”, while remaining at a level clearly higher than those of the “pre-Covid” years.
Paste is the main tomato product, both in production volume and in commercial value.
10 countries export 95% of the total volume.
In 2021/2022, global exports of tomato paste generated more than USD 3.6 billion of the USD 7.5 billion generated by the global trade of tomato products.
More than 3/4 of the canned tomatoes exported globally originate in Italy.
Tomato sauces & ketchup are mainly produced as a second stage processing product and hence large volume are traded by countries which do not have a first-stage tomato processing activity, as the Netherlands, Germany or Belgium.
